Welcome to TREKKING, a project inspired by people and nature moving through space and time. In celebration of Khasma’s 10th anniversary and 20 years of friendship, we decided to think bigger and invite some of our favorite composers and artists to collaborate with us. This is our first large-scale commissioning project and the first time we are collaborating with a visual artist.
We titled this project TREKKING for a number of reasons:
1) Our piano duo name, Khasma, stems from a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park called Chasm Lake (the Greek form of Chasm is Khasma). After spending a significant amount of time trekking in the Rockies, this hike has become one of our absolute favorites.
2) We have met many composer friends and colleagues as we’ve trekked across the US for performances, festivals, and conferences. The composers we have invited to write for us have contributed to our lives in a meaningful way and are people we have grown to love, respect, and admire over the years.
3) In Chris Craychee’s words: “For as long as I can remember I’ve loved looking out the windows of cars, buses, and trains, and watching places, both familiar and new, moving through my field of vision, occupying it for only a few minutes or a few seconds, but always having that continuity of motion. Scenery would pass by when the vehicle was moving, but light and shadow would still move across everything, slowly but not imperceptibly, even after it had stopped.”
We want to share that same sense of movement, beauty, and creativity of the natural world with you. We invite you to trek with us.
